£700 per year of food waste in the average UK family. Try to cut down food waste in households through education on date labelling, therefore save families money.
Families across the UK, especially lower income families.
‘Use by’ and ‘Best Before’ dates are confusing to many people. I want to create a simple education campaign for families and children to understand the two terms. This campaign could feature on the products themselves, or on supermarket shelves. There could also be simple recipes for food that is past ‘best before’ date, for example overly ripe bananas used in banana bread. The campaign should be colourful and easy to understand.
1. Economically - Families save money on food spending. More so during anticipated recession and wage stagnation.
2. Environmentally – reduction in food waste long term should cut over production and some greenhouse gas emissions.
3. Social – sharing of recipes and education on food/food waste may strengthen social fabric and community cohesion during/after COVID-19.
