All participants add their ideas, inspired by virtual events held around the world by local organizers in each city. The city with the most ideas will receive the award for the most creative city.
Teenagers aged 15-19 years in non-formal learning programs.
A play to earn, monopoly game where winning players earn points or tokens that can be converted into fractional (less than 1) shares of Real Estate Investment Trusts. The aim is to model how real estate can be used to build wealth while owning shares in REAL, real estate companies. Participants will be required to reflect and share lessons on the skills & strategies used during the game.
Participatory as multiple participants can be involved at every stage of the process of the learning game.
Promotes youth financial literacy.
Promotes inclusion in the use of various financial products (stocks, REITS) that are usually marketed by the media as products for adults in white-collar jobs.
Monopoly boards to facilitate the in-person games.
Funding – This idea can be piloted for between 15 to 20 youths who are interested in passive investment vehicles. Since the idea requires the use of tokens that can be converted to pay for fractional stocks/REITS, the cost of these REITS would have to be funded by a project sponsor.
Capacity-building trainings for participants on the basics of the stock/real estate market. Locally, personnel from the Lusaka Securities Exchange can be engaged to provide this training.
A virtual monopoly app would be ideal for this project to facilitate remote play. The application would also require a seamless token to cash conversion; a marketplace linking a stock exchange to the monopoly app, and a dashboard to review purchases and holdings. However, for a pilot, this can still be done in person and winners can have their accounts created on an exchange by the project admins (Youth Field Officers).
A team of 3 project administrators will be available. These are Youth Field Officers (YFOs) who will be responsible for identifying participants, providing participants with materials/Monopoly boards, clarifying rules of play and providing information on how tokens will be distributed and redeemed for investment.
Right now, we have no team to build the Monopoly game app. Services can be outsourced.
This idea promotes learning by doing, promotes financial literacy for youths by expanding their knowledge on any available options for investment. It also promotes critical thinking, negotiation and decision-making based on the inherent nature of the game. All these are practices and skills needed for youths to be more effective in the world today.
Zambia, specifically Chibolya, George and Kanyama communities.
For the in-person approach, yes. All we need is to acquire Monopoly boards, identify participants with the bracketed criteria above, trainers to conduct basic capacity-building trainings for participants on the stock market, creating individual investment accounts for Monopoly game winners. Additionally, project admins will also monitor the participants on regular intervals to keep track of the games, clarify rules of play and develop leaderboards.
Donor funding or adding the project as component of the programs budget and workplan.

Posted on 25/05/2022I LOVE the creativity of using gamification to teach these skills! I wish I had learned about this when I was younger! I also really appreciate how youth were included in the brainstorm!
