Students who attend the sessions - Those who are interested in self employment but also those who are receiving industry specific talks and taking part in hackathons. They will receive relevant industry talks or opportunities to apply their learning to a task. Academics - they can choose the content of the workshops to ensure that employability and/or enterprise skills are taught for at least 12 hours. Some academics will be able to get prestiegious industry speakers in to talk to the students that they would not have been able to afford before. Careers - these sessions are also an opportunity to promote the services that Career Connect can offer, raises its profile and generates more enquiries and footfall from students in the hub, increases the number of appointments. University - the feedback from all the sessions run so far has been very positive from the students, so they appreciate the benefit. This will hopefully be reflected in NSS surveys and any other feedback about the university.
We decided to offer Enterprise and employability additional training/workshops for students. Ideally, this would be a practical and interractive workshop for 12 hours of delivery. These were intended to cover the finance side of setting up a business or freelancing. However, we decided to be more flexible with the content, allowing academics to bring in their industry contacts to deliver talks and to do activities such as hackathons. We also aquired a new trainer who covers a day on raising aspirations and mindset. This has been a particularly popular day and feedback has been very positive. This was delivered to students from a more disadvantaged background (widening participation) who benefited from it greatly and students went away with an action plan to implement. We advertised this to academics and the response has been phenomenal. There has been a real appetite for this offer. Normally, we offer 4 of these workshops a year, but this year, we are set to deliver 11 of them reaching a wider group of students, engaging schools who have not engaged with us before, including the London campus - equality, diversity and inclusion. The budget for delivery of 12 hours will be paid for by the be Inspired project (£1,200 + VAT & lunch). Many academics are choosing to put these sessions on during get ahead week and even into the new academic year, which has never happened before. It is encouraging students to stay on campus and still engage with the University post final year project submission. Most of these sessions will be delivered face to face, although there is also the option to deliver virtually which will allow more students to participate
Students have the opportunity to practically apply their learning to a real situation or business idea. In a hackathon, they apply their learning and work on mini projects with an industry expert in their particular field, this is not an opportunity that many universities offer. As the academics choose the content of the workshops, they are relevant and of interest to the students and their studies, preparing them for working life after graduation. These sessions also help to build students' confidence and knowledge of their industry, encourage teamwork, problem solving and other employability skills or entrepreneurial skills. Benefits to the University is that the students will stay on campus longer in the term, will be more likely to engage with the Careers team who will help with refining CV's Linked in profiles, application forms and interview techniques, helping students to achieve graduate level jobs (Graduate outcomes). Benefits to academics - academics can take advantage of industry links to benefit the students and enrich the learning experience and also help to strengthen industry links and relationships.
